Taipei, a night that one market can fill

If I had to pick one sentence for Taipei, I would write a night that one market can fill. The evening does not have to be made into a grand itinerary. Once the sun goes down and people gather in one place, the city moves at a different speed than it does by day. It is less about how much you saw than about the sounds and smells of a single alley taking up the whole of today's memory.

That sentence is not about a list of sights but about the density of a street. Move a Taipei night onto a screen and it looks less like a map of places to tick off than like one continuous neighbourhood. It is also why an imaginary itinerary arriving from Seoul does not immediately get busy. You put a pin in one destination and stay near it until the night has run long enough.

On the map it is south-southwest

Taipei's coordinates are 25.033, 121.5654. Measured along the great circle from Seoul it is 1,485 km, on a bearing of south-southwest. A ruled line between Seoul and Taipei on a flat map does not actually show the shortest path across the Earth's surface, because the moment you flatten the planet, a line on a sphere becomes a line on a map.

The sequence of airspace the service computes is South Korea → Taiwan. A short list of countries, but the direction across the water is unambiguous. Taipei can feel very far from Seoul and then suddenly close once you zoom in. Holding both senses at once is what characterises the number 1,485 km.

A little over two hours

Assuming a cruising speed of 850km/h plus half an hour of ground travel, the service's estimate is about 2.2 hours. Not a real timetable, but a number for converting the gap between cities into a feeling. Read it as: you can spend the morning in Seoul and still slip into the rhythm of that same night.

Taipei uses the Asia/Taipei time zone, 1 hour behind Seoul. Turning the clock back one notch hardly requires recalculating the date. The population recorded in this dataset is about 7,871,900 (GeoNames). Which is why the night here reads less like the quiet of an outer suburb than like the expression of a city where a great many people start their evening at once.

The antipode is -25.0, -58.4 — Argentina. Calculate the far side of where you are standing and you cross onto land in the southern hemisphere. Thinking about a Taipei night and ending up in Argentina is the usefully useless pleasure of reading maps.

The way into the night

Among the waypoint candidates close to the direct line from Seoul to Taipei is Dalian, 493km from Seoul with a detour ratio of 1.37. Fukuoka is 540km at 1.23, and Nagasaki 597km at 1.20. Lay down small steps coming south from the north and the direction of the destination reads more clearly on the map.

Drop a little further south and Shanghai qualifies too: 866km from Seoul at 1.05. The shortest distance and the story of an imaginary journey do not always pick the same line, but these candidates build a sense of the direction lying between Seoul and Taipei. Set off from Dalian, pass Fukuoka and shift your eye toward Shanghai, and Taipei is no longer a small dot at the bottom of the map. It is the end of a road where sea and city alternate.

Saying one night market is enough does not mean there is little to do. It means that while a single place absorbs the city's hours, a traveller's attention moves from a list to a life. Taipei is 1,485 km from Seoul, and yet in the way it spends a night it remains a closer city than you would expect.
